DRAFT
for the project. At the time of installation, the piezometer was saturated with water, taped
to a 1-inch-outside-diameter polyvinyl chloride (PVC) grout pipe in an inverted position
to maintain saturation and inserted into the open borehole to the desired depth. The
boring was then filled with cement- bentonite grout to near the ground surface. The
installation was equipped with a steel monument that was grouted into the borehole collar
to protect the piezometer cables from traffic and the elements. To permit frequent
collection of groundwater data, the vibrating-wire piezometer was equipped with a
datalogger placed in the steel monument. The datalogger is currently programed to
collect groundwater data at four-hour intervals, and can be reprogrammed for other
collection intervals, if desired.
A.2 LABORATORY TESTING
A.2.1 General
The samples obtained from the borings were examined in our laboratory, where the
physical characteristics of the samples were noted and the field classifications modified
where necessary. At the time of classification, the natural moisture content of samples of
fine-grained soil was determined. Additional testing included Torvane shear strength
measurements, dry unit weight determinations, grain-size analyses, Atterberg limits
determinations, and one-dimensional consolidation testing. A summary of the laboratory
test results is provided in Table 3A. The following sections describe the testing program in
more detail.
A.2.2 Natural Moisture Contents
Natural moisture content determinations were completed in conformance with ASTM
International (ASTM) D2216. The results are summarized on Figures 1A through 11A and
in Table 3A.
A.2.3 Torvane Shear Strength
The approximate undrained shear strength of the fine-grained soils was determined using
the Torvane shear device. The Torvane is a handheld apparatus with vanes that are inserted
into the soil. The torque required to fail the soil in shear around the vanes is measured
using a calibrated spring. The results of the Torvane shear-strength testing are summarized
on Figures 1A through 11A, where applicable.
A.2.4 Undisturbed Unit Weight
The unit weight, or density, of undisturbed soil samples was determined in the laboratory
in conformance with ASTM D2937. The results are summarized on Figures 1A through 11A,
where applicable, and in Table 3A.
A.2.5 Grain-Size Analysis (Dry Sieve Method)
Dry-sieve analyses were performed on selected soil samples in substantial conformance
with ASTM D6913. The results are summarized on Figures 15A and 16A.
GRI #6497-A - 2.M0 Indoor Football Practice Facility Page A-3
August 26, 2021
