Dylan Beaumont
Wilkes Drive
Eugene, Oregon
03/07/17
Re: Undeveloped park property located in the Santa Clara area of Eugene on Ferndale Drive, west of
River Road at the intersection with River Loop 1
Dear Envision Eugene / City of Eugene Planning Office,
I understand the positive benefits of adding a city park to our block. Unfortunately, from my experience
as a resident in the immediate area, I know there are considerable concerns as well.
On our block on a daily basis trucks race in excess of the speed limit between River Road / River Loop 1,
River Loop 2 and Chapman / Whiteley Landing. They take the sharp curve where the proposed park will
be at reckless speeds. We have dealt with this distraction for years.
In inclement weather, the negligent drivers even race on the lawn of Madison Middle School and in the
center of the road on River Loop 1.
We don't have a routinely visible police presence in the neighborhood, given our distance from busier
patrol beats & being between County & City jurisdictions. Because of this the behavior largely goes
unchecked.
More than a handful of times I've seen drivers roughly try to course correct at the curve due to speed
and / or to avoid pedestrians.
The park's location would encourage more pedestrians. I am concerned that this in conjunction with
this erratic driving and the sharp bend is a certain liability.
Additionally, we deal with after-hours congregating at Madison Middle School & Whitely Landing on a
daily basis. The disturbances overnight are frustrating. They lead to a feeling of less security in our own
neighborhood. I do expect a city park would regrettably provide another destination for trespassing.
I appreciate you providing me a voice.
I hope you will take my concerns into consideration as planning stages proceed.
Dylan Beaumont
