After discussing this issue with
the other Directors here, I was reminded that requesting the signing of a petition like this at
our place of business would be seen as a work requirement. "We'd like you to sign this
petition" becomes "You need to sign this petition" when presented to employees at work. So,
although I was unable to provide you with 200 signatures objecting to the proposed zoning
changes, I did gather a page of signatures from the leadership group of our company.
Directors, Managers, and Supervisors have signed this petition. I have included a scanned
copy of that petition here. See attached.
Your Eugene location is an important part of the dealer network that keeps Hewescraft boats
selling and keeps 200 people employed here in Colville, Washington. All of us here at Hewes
Marine Company understand the need for conservation and stewardship for the climate and
environment. We sell fishing boats, and as such we wish for healthy fish stocks, clean water,
and unspoiled outdoor locations to sustain us as individuals and to keep our business and
livelihoods viable in perpetuity. Changes to your neighborhood zoning codes will do nothing
to help the environment, water, climate, and natural habitats. However, it absolutely has the
potential to damage employment opportunities and family livelihoods in our small, rural
community.
Please feel free to use any and all that I have stated here when making your case this evening
at your planning commission public hearing. We are all behind you, although I worry that our
not -from -Eugene status will make it possible for your planning commissioners to discount our
opinions as not valid. We wanted to help anyway, and I hope this effort was not in vain.
320
