F l
u~
LOCAL STREETS
Local streets are the framework around which
communities are built. Although the primary
function of local streets is to provide access to
properties fronting on the street, to a great extent,
they also determine the form and character of cities
and neighborhoods. The pattern and design of local
streets help shape neighborhood image and identity,
and can influence whether or not an area feels safe.
Local streets can also influence the degree of
communication neighbors have with one another,
the extent to which residents use alternate modes of
transportation, and the population's general feelings
of well-being and comfort related to their immedi-
ate environment.
The design and appearance of local streets should
convey this purpose through the use of relatively
narrow widths, short lengths, frequent connections
with other streets, and alignments which encourage
slow traffic speeds and discourage through traffic.
Table 2 contains a summary of typical widths for
local street elements such as right-of-way, pave-
ment, sidewalks and plant strip areas, and traffic
volume thresholds.
Local Street Standards
Table 2
W
Q
V
Pavin Width
O
(Setback)
®
Planting
Average
Type of Street
.
.
.
Width
No Parking Par mg
Parkin One Side Two Sides
Sidewalks
Strips
Daily Traffic
(ADT)
1-way Alley ©
20'
12'
None
None
NA
2 -way Alley ©
20'
16'
None
None
Access Lane (0
AW
21'(7/14)
1061
7' and 6'
<250
Acccst, Lane ®
55
25' (7/14/7)
2061
2 @ 7'-6"
ADT
Low-Volume Res.®
45'
201(10/10)
2 @ 6'
2 @ 6'-6"
250
Low-Volume Res.®
45'
211(7/14)
2 @ 6'
2 @ 6'-0"
to750
Low-Volume Res.®
55'
28'(7/14/7)
2 @ 6'
2 @ 7'-6"
ADT
Med. -Volume Res ®
50'
20'(10/10)
2 @ 6'
2 @ 9'-0"
>750
Med.-Volume kest
1
2i-(7/10/10)
2 @ 6'
2 @ 8'-0"
ADT
Med.-Volume Res ®1
60'
` I 34'(7110/10M 2 @ 6'
2 @ 7'0"
m el ial/ 55'-70' 30'44' Curbside/ I2@6-0-Mimi NA
C Setback
A.
