Lydia, I didn't have the email for the Lane County Planning Commission, so I hope sending it to you as Director
of Planning will work for my testimony having been submitted by 5:00 PM. Thanks.
First off I want to thank Terri Harding, other City staff, the City manager, and the many dozens and even
hundreds of citizens who participated in this planning effort over the last 6 years. Bravo!
As far as fine tuning the resulting plan that is before us, I would like to say that I oppose the use of the land in
the Clear Lake industrial area expansion that has been designated as campus industrial. That very chunk of land
(of good size) if I am not mistaken was the piece that Commissioner Bill Dwyer proposed buying from the City
of Eugene as a new site for the fair grounds. Of course that never happen, but it was seriously considered.
As some of you may know, I participated in the effort to preserve and rehabilitate Civic Stadium, which even
though it burned down, was somewhat successful is saving the land's designation for recreation. Durning that
planning effort, I assisted Marshall Glickman who was hired to design a plan for the site. I basically did
footwork researching all the recreational and entertainment facilities in the metro area. I also reached out to
Travel Lane County for their input. What I learned from them was that there is a serious need for sports
facilities that can handle anywhere from 8 to a dozen games at the same time. Folks from around the nation
book such facilities. The closest to Eugene is Medford and Salem. These are for kids and their parent. Soccer,
softball, (volleyball if there are indoor facilities) among others. There is big money in it.
I would like to see that area zoned for that sort of activity - perfect next to Golden Garden Ponds Park and the
new Bethel school.
You could trade for the Gonya Family land west of Hynic's. Their land is more appropriate for campus
industrial, being near a large industrial site with toxic chemicals (instead of residential as they were hoping for).
Anyway, that's my suggestion for what it's worth.
