We are very concerned about very local traffic issues, including many arising from the construction of the proposed
mixed-use building on the corner of Hilyard and 32nd.
1) CURRENT UN-addressed TRAFFIC problems prior to any new building:
* Trying to turn left from 32nd heading south onto Hilyard
Often long waits
* Trying to turn right from 32nd heading north on Hilyard
Driver's View of traffic coming north on Hilyard obscured by cars waiting to turn left onto Hilyard.
Often long waits
* No formal pedestrian cross-walk from 32nd across ALL lanes of Hilyard, resulting in a dangerous strategy of crossing
half-way and waiting on the meager island for traffic to abate before continuing to the far side.
* Heavy traffic coursing along Kincaid in front of our homess, especially during drop-off and pick-up times for people
using Ellis Parker School at the end of Kincaid by Kincaid Park.
From our front windows we observe that many cars traversing Kincaid seem not to respect the residential
streets 25 MPH speed limit. There is no police enforcement of this limit on Kincaid.
2) NEW TRAFFIC Concerns re NEW LAND USE at 32nd and Hilyard
* All of problems listed in 1) above WILL BE GREATLY MAGNIFIED with the proposed mixed-use construction at 32nd and
Hilyard
MORE vehicular traffic created by new residents AND their guests AND clients seeking to use the new
commercial establishments
MORE pedestrians trying to access new apartments, new commercial establishments, and / or the Amazon
greenways
3) IDEAS to LESSEN PROBLEMS
limit number of apartments / floors in new building. Fewer residents will obviously mean fewer vehicles in
circulation
assure ample ON-SITE parking for both residents AND for patrons visiting the commercial establishments.
repeat: AMPLE ON-SITE!
sophisticated TRAFFIC & PEDESTRIAN signal at 32nd & Hilyard controlling flow of traffic and pedestrians in all
directions
SPEED BUMPS on Kincaid between 32nd and Ellis Parker Elementary School.
CONTROL the 'blind intersection' at Kincaid and 35th with, at a minimum, a 4-way stop sign. As we travel south
on Kincaid from our homes on Kincaid, it astonishes us that there is NO traffic control there at all! PLEASE explain this:
only one block away at the corner of Harris and 35th there is a STOP sign for traffic wanting to turn left or right onto
35th, while at the much "blinder" intersection of Kincaid and 35th there is nothing.
