Depending on the nature and condition of an individual structure, rehabilitation, rather <br />than replacement, may be less costly per square foot, more labor-intensive, and less <br />energy-consuming, thereby resulting in net savings. <br />Objectives <br />Develop and expand public awareness of the metropolitan area's origin, development, <br />and history. <br />2. Encourage preservation and restoration of sites, structures, objects and areas of cultural, <br />historic, or archaeological significance for the enjoyment and knowledge of present and <br />future generations. <br />Policies <br />1.1 Adopt and implement historic preservation policies, regulations, and incentive programs <br />that encourage the inventory, preservation, and restoration of structures; landmarks; sites; <br />and areas of cultural, historic, or archaeological significance, consistent with overall <br />policies. <br />1.2 Institute and support projects and programs that increase citizen and visitor awareness of <br />the area's history and encourage citizen participation in and support of programs <br />designed to recognize and memorialize the area's history. <br />1.3 Explore the feasibility of a metropolitan non-profit historic preservation development <br />organization to bring together public and private funding sources. <br />1.4 Periodically review state and federal programs intended to assist in preservation of <br />historic and archaeological sites for possible use in connection with local implementation <br />programs. <br />1.5 Monitor and evaluate the effect of these actions on other adopted policies and the <br />metropolitan area as a whole. <br />1.6 Local governments shall pursue grants from all available sources to assist with the <br />identification and evaluation of historically significant sites. <br />Laurel Ridge Record (Z 15-5) Page 710 <br />
