Many of us remember places where <br />people knew their neighbors and were familiar with each other's families over time. <br />Cohousing communities offer a contemporary model for recreating neighborhoods with a <br />sense of place, and the security and sense of belonging which accompanies it. <br />Provided is a brief overview of what the proposed Oakleigh Meadow Cohousing project offers to <br />the River Road / Santa Clara neighborhood and the greater Eugene community: <br />• A safe and supportive environment for <br />children and families. <br />• A balance of privacy and community that <br />reflects the values of the community. <br />• Strengthen Eugene's connection to River <br />Road/ Santa Clara neighborhood. <br />• Provide a financially stable building <br />model to the residential market. <br />• Environmentally-sensitive design and site <br />layout emphasizing pedestrian and <br />bicycle circulation. <br />• A development that maximizes open <br />space near a natural resource by <br />clustering dwellings and dedicating <br />much of the property to remain as open <br />space. <br />• An intergenerational neighborhood with <br />the strong sense of community typical <br />of older neighborhoods in the River <br />Road Area. <br />HISTORY OF COHOUSING <br />Provides moderately priced home <br />ownership housing for working families <br />and retirees. <br />Creates diversity of homes that range in <br />size to accommodate a variety of <br />household income levels. <br />• Exceeds Oregon State Energy Efficiency <br />Standardsfor residential homes by a <br />minimum of 20% for all building <br />performance criteria. <br />• Minimizes water use through <br />landscaping with regional and native <br />species. <br />Fits into the River Road context using <br />architecture inspired by local buildings <br />and the details and forms of 19th <br />Century Lane County homes and <br />buildings. <br />• Successful model that acts as catalyst for <br />similar growth and expansion in Eugene <br />and River Road/ Santa Clara. <br />Cohousing was initially pioneered in Denmark and the Netherlands, where this type of <br />housing has flourished in the last 30 years and now has over 300 such developments built. <br />Since the book, Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves (Ten Speed <br />Press; 1988, 1994), was first published, cohousing has attracted national attention <br />including coverage on ABC's World News Tonight, and articles in Architecture, The New <br />York Times, Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times among many others.
