FOCAL STREETS
f
.ocal streets are the framework around which
,ommunities are built. Although the primary
rction of local streets is to provide access to
„operties fronting on the street, to a great extent,
hey also determine the form and character of cities
~d neighborhoods. The pattern and design of local
„Deets help shape neighborhood image and identity,
and can influence whether or not an area feels safe.
'kcal streets can also influence the degree of
ymmunication. neighbors have with one another,
the extent to which residents use alternate modes of
insportation, and the population's general feelings
well-being and comfort related to their immedi-
ate environment.
I
Local Street Standards
The design and appearance of local streets should
convey this purpose through the use of relatively
narrow widths, short lengths, frequent connections
with other streets, and alignments which encourage
slow traffic speeds and discourage through traffic.
Table 2 contains a summary of typical widths for
local street elements such as right-of-way, pave-
ment, sidewalks and plant strip areas, and traffic
volume thresholds.
Table 2
R.O.W.
Paving Wid
th
U
(Setback)
®
Plantin
Average
T~~de of Street .
Width
No .
Parkin
Parking
O
S
d
I
Par in
TwnsiAes
Sidewalks
~
Strips
Daily Traffic
ne
i
e
(ADT)
i~
.
,1-way AlIey ©
20
12'
None
None
NA
2-way Alley ©
20'
16'
None
None
Access Lane
40'
211(7/14)
1 @ 6'
T and 6'
<250
Access Lane
55'
28 (711417)
2 @ 6'
2 @T-b"
ADT
iLow-Volume Res.®
45'
20'(10/10)
2 @ 6'
2 @ 6'-6"
250
Low-Volume Res.®
~
45'
211(7/14)
2 @ 6'
2 @ 61-0"
1o750
Pw-Volume Res.@
55'
28'(7/14/7)
2 @ 6'
2 @ T-6"
ADT
SMed.-Volume Res
50'
20'(10/10)
2 @ 6'
2 @ 91-0"
>750
Med.-Volume Res.@
55'
271(7110110)
2 @ 6'
2 @ 8'-0"
ADT
V
l
d
R
0
'
'
'
1
Me

ume
o
es.
1 60
34
(7/1CY10Y7)
2 @ 6
2 @ 7
0
16min1 vial/
55'-70'
30'-44'
Curbside/
2@6'-("Min
NA
Hndustrial
Setback
Setback sidewalk dimension Includes a 5' paved walk and Y strip behind the walk.
