Introduction
Consumers have adopted new, Internet-based technologies and mobile connections at an unprecedented
rate. Internet-based products and devices, including smartphones and tablets, allow mobile access to appli-
cations l ike mHealth, distance learning, social media and a host of video-conferencing services, and are pro-
viding consumers everywhere with new choices to connect, to communicate, and to access information and
entertainment. IP (Internet Protocol) technology allows consumers to use a range of devices - anything from
yourTV, phone, laptop and tablet to seamlessly communicate using voice, data, and Internet applications
on wireless and wireline networks-opening the door to boundless opportunities.
Yet there's no limit to what's possible. Connectivity empowers everyone to innovate, grow, create and
thrive. The health and education sectors depend on connections more and more - whether it's efficiently
and conveniently managing health care, accessing education opportunities for students and teachers, or
empowering all communities to grow and thrive. Students are now benefiting from digital textbooks and
"blended learning," which fuses traditional classroom techniques with online instruction for a richer
educational experience.
IP technology can also be a leading economic force. A 2013 study conducted by research firm
Information Age Economics projects that wireless infrastructure investment will generate as much
as $1.2 trillion in economic growth while creating 1.2 million newjobs over the next five years.' Also,
according to Recon Analytics, wireless employees are typically paid 65 percent higher than the national
average of other workers.'
At AT&T, we are striving to meet the needs of our customers today, while preparing to deliver the innovative
technologies they'll want and need tomorrow. Through our multi-year Velocity IP (VIP) investment
plan we expect to significantly expand and enhance our wireless and wireline IP broadband networks to
our customers in more places in order to deliver the latest technologies, products and services to more
Americans. In short, through the VIP plan, AT&T is working to deliver more of what our customers want
today and in the future.
Part of that investment can beseen in local communities across the country - much of which has gone to expanding
AT&T's high-speed 4G LTE wireless network, which now covers more than 300 million people in the U.S.
We're deploying the latest technology to connect our customers. To help you better understand the
technology, the process and what is entailed in deployment, AT&T has developed this overview.
Bringing the latest technology to consumers pg. 4
The benefits of a connected community pg. 6
Technology & Process pg. 7
FAQs pg. 12
Glossary of terms pg. 19
1 Pearce, r,,rl_or 3rd Pagano, Informatlcri Age Eca-, mlcs t fireless Broadband Inhr istruct_iie-A Ca alyctfOr --,DP and Job "rcwih 2013-2017; Septernte,2013-
2 Recon An ay ics -ne Wireless Industry: T'~e Essertlai Engine of US Economic Growth, May 2012.
